11 Tips on What to Write in a Sympathy Card
1. It’s always better to say something
We’ve partnered with Untangle, a bereavement support community and helpline, to offer the best advice for writing a sympathy card. The Untangle team supports thousands of bereaved families and friends, and has all the tips you need to give your loved one support at this difficult time…
Some people avoid sending sympathy cards because they’re scared of saying the ‘wrong’ thing, but the truth is, it’s always better to say something. Acknowledging your loved one’s grief is important. If you’re really struggling with the right words, a simple ‘thinking of you’ or ‘I’m here for you’ can be enough. There are no words that can truly make them feel better, but the knowledge that they’re loved and cared for will be a comfort
2. It’s never too early or too late
There’s no wrong time to send a sympathy card; it’s never too early or too late. So don’t think the window has passed just because it’s been a few weeks (or even months) since your loved one became bereaved. Many who are grieving say that the care and contact from friends tends to drop off not long after a funeral so, actually, sending something later can be a really thoughtful way of showing you remember. Grief has no timeline, so even though it may seem late to you, you’re really acknowledging something that still feels fresh to them, and that they live with every day.
3. Mark the occasions
Anniversaries, birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… Special days can be painful for bereaved people, so a small gesture to let them know you’ve remembered can mean so very much in the most difficult moments. The ‘firsts’ are painful, but the years that follow are just as challenging, so consider making it an annual gesture.
4. Share a memory of the person they lost
If you were close or have standout memories of the person your loved one has lost, share it with them in the card. Even if, to you, it seems like a small or silly story, to them it’s something to treasure. If you didn’t know the person well, maybe mention the times your loved one spoke about them or the impact they had on their lives; a small acknowledgement of the depth of their love and the relationship they shared.
5. Be specific with offers of help
‘Let me know if there’s anything you need,’ is a kindness to those who are bereaved, but they may feel too shy or too awkward to ask for help or specify what they need the most. They may not even know what they need – brain fog is common for those who are grieving – so try a question instead: ‘Is there anything I can do?’ You could also make specific offers, such as ‘I can pick up food for you and leave it on the doorstep’ or ‘I can cook you something/clean/do laundry.’ Don’t wait for them to ask.
6. Don’t compare your loss
All grief is relative to the person experiencing it, which means comparisons – well-meaning as they may be – aren’t often helpful to those going through a difficult time. Take care not to make your message about yourself or your experiences, and instead focus on sending support to the bereaved person in your card.

7. Follow up with future wishes
Sadly, grief isn’t something your loved one is simply going to ‘move on’ from. It comes in waves, with some periods being more difficult than others. That’s why we suggest sending sympathy cards long after the event also – even just a short ‘thinking of you’ follow-up a few months after the first card can mean a lot.
8. Consider grief across cultures
Not everyone has the same religious, cultural or spiritual beliefs, so it’s important to be mindful of what your loved one believes in when writing a sympathy card. While you might find comfort in hoping that the ones we have lost are looking down on us, the person you are writing to might not believe in an afterlife. If you know that they do, you could add a little message that nods to those beliefs, but if you’re unsure, avoid putting it in your sympathy card.
9. Steer clear of advice or predictions
Instead of trying to give advice or telling someone who’s bereaved how they’re going to feel, it’s enough to simply show your support and give them room to talk. If they decide they want to seek advice or ask about your experiences, they will do so in time.

10. Include the family in your greeting
If the person you’re writing to lives with others who are grieving (such as their partner, their parents or their children), you might want to include their names when addressing the card. You could also write two separate sympathy cards: one that’s more personal to the person you’re closest to, and another for the whole family.
11. Don’t expect a response
Your loved one may feel too overwhelmed to respond right now. Remind them that this is okay, that they don’t have to reply, and that you’ll be there when they’re ready to talk.
