I’m proud to be y-orchid - Bloom & Wild's popular flower baby name predictions.
Ten percent of the names featured in the list of 100 most popular baby names last year are or have taken inspiration from flowers. Our flower experts share the most popular flower baby names of last year and look ahead to the release of the 2022 list. It’s clear that parents turned to flowers for inspiration with Ivy, Lily and Willow breaking into the top ten, and pundits predict more botanical names entering the boys’ top list this year. Tanya Burr just announced the birth of Sage and other aromatic plants like Cedar and Basil might make the top 100. It’s not just the masses looking to flowers for inspiration, with everyone from Beyonce and Jay-Z to Will and Jada Smith, opting for floral names for their children.
Ivy (5)
Ivy is the most popular flower-inspired name, at number five on the list of girls’ names. The simple and charming name has an affiliation with Christmas time, making it an apt choice of name for December babies. Often used for girls, the botanical name cemented its place in the top 1,000 names in 2001. But thanks to celebrity parents Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who named their daughter Blue Ivy in 2012, the name has sat in the top 100 most popular names since and has continued its rise, entering the top 50 in 2015 and top ten in 2020.

Lily (7)
Following closely behind at number seven is Lily. There are several variations of the name including Lilly (which also features on the list at number 96), Lilian, the middle name of Rebel Wilson’s new daughter and as a shortened version of Elizabeth (60). Pundits have suggested that Lilibet - the former Queen of England’s nickname and daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - might enter the top 100 in 2023. Bloom & Wild’s Director of Brand & Range, Jo Reason added, “The popularity of the lily can be seen from the variety of occasions they are used for. White lilies symbolise purity and rebirth which is why they’re popular at major life events like weddings and funerals, whereas orange lilies symbolise confidence and energy and so they’re popular with our customers congratulating friends and family on new homes and new jobs.”

Willow (10)
Willow comes in at number ten to make it three plant-inspired baby names in the top ten. Deriving from the Old English word welig, the name dated back to ancient Britain and was originally a surname. With a rich history of symbolism, the name has continued its rise in popularity - previously sitting at number 12 in 2020. It’s popular with celebrity children including Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s Willow Smith and pop star Pink’s daughter, Willow Sage.

Rosie (11)
Rosie fell out of the top ten last year at number 11. However, the name which is sometimes shortened to Rose (which landed at number 68), has kept its place in the top 100 since 1996, making it one of the longest-standing floral names in the top girls’ names list. Jo Reason, Director of Brand & Range at Bloom & Wild added, “The English classic has a range of meanings, roses can be associated with more than just love and romance, and can symbolise gratitude, admiration, mystery and enchantment.”

Daisy (15)
Daisy has been growing in popularity and reached its highest ranking since 2010 in the last year. A name chosen by celebrities such as Katie Perry and Orlando Bloom who named their daughter Daisy Dove in 2020. Reflecting the way the flower opens in the day and closes at night, Daisy comes from the Old English daegeseage, meaning the day’s eye.

Poppy (17)
During World War I, poppies became a symbol of the sacrifice of fallen soldiers, hence why we still wear poppies on Armistice Day. The name Poppy has entered mainstream TV series ranging from Gossip Girl to Modern Family and even Harry Potter. Florist for Bloom & Wild, Caroline Grimble added, “Although commonly associated with a bright red colour, poppies, like roses, can bloom in a variety of colours including purple and white with blossoms that can measure up to six inches across.”

Violet (45)
Blooming from spring through to summer, these striking perennials grow in the wild in the UK and they’re edible and taste a bit like ‘parma violet’ sweets! Another favourite with the A-List includes Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner whose eldest daughter is Violet.

Holly (95)
Like Ivy, Holly has its affiliation with Christmas time making it another popular choice for December babies. Just making it into the top 100 at 96, the name has more than doubled in Google searches in the past ten years.
