A guide to the different types of flower bouquets

Choosing a flower bouquet, whether it’s for a wedding, a birthday, or just to perk yourself up, should be fun and exciting. From presentation bouquets to waterfall bouquets, a lot of people don’t even realise how many different styles of bouquets there are. And it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with so many options out there!

Luckily, we’re here to help and have created a list of some of the most popular types of flower bouquets so you can decide which style will best complement the occasion.

1. Hand-tied bouquets

Hand-tied flower bouquets are one of the most popular types that suit any event. Just as the name suggests, this bouquet features a bundle of flowers that are tied together using material like string, wire, ribbon or any other piece of fabric. They have a very laid-back, casual look about them which many people prefer. Plus, any DIY lovers out there will easily be able to create their own hand-tied bouquet too.

2. The posy bouquet

Classic and timeless, the beautiful posy bouquet is ideal for those who like a simple, understated style. This bouquet features plump, round flowers on short stems that are wrapped together tightly with ribbon for a full but compact look. Posy bouquets are super easy to hold and carry as they’re lightweight and often small too - making them especially popular for weddings. Many different flowers can be used for posy bouquets including everyone’s favourite, peonies, classic roses and pretty gerbera daises.

3. Biedermeier bouquet

For a bouquet with a dramatic impact, the biedermeier is ideal! This bouquet is usually tightly wrapped and arranged in a circular pattern with different coloured flowers to draw attention. It’s perfect for anyone who likes to make a statement. Usually, orchids, dahlias, roses and tulips are used for this type of bouquet, which is then surrounded by vibrant green foliage and textured ferns.

4. Cascade/waterfall bouquet

Cascading or waterfall bouquets are the epitome of elegance. They include beautiful, bold flowers, like roses, lilies, dahlias and even hyacinths, long, trailing vines and draping leaves for a truly stunning bouquet. Foams, wires and ribbons are also all used to keep everything in place. This type of bouquet can feel heavy, but we think it’s totally worth it! The waterfall style was actually made popular by Princess Diana in the 80s as it was what she chose for her wedding bouquet. And it’s recently making its well-deserved revival.

5. Composite bouquet

The composite flower bouquet is a unique and modern style that may look simple, but it's actually very intricate. Also known as the carmen rose bouquet, this style is made up of hundreds of individual petals, which are wired together to look like one huge flower. The petals can be collected from any type of flower. But, large and thick petals will work best. You can bet that this bouquet will leave a lasting impression!

6. Presentation bouquet

At the turn of the 20th century, the presentation bouquets were wildly popular. Designed to be cradled in the arms, this bouquet uses long-stemmed flowers, calla lilies and roses, as well as delphiniums, roses and a bunch of bright and beautiful tropical flowers too. You probably would’ve seen this type of bouquet being presented to pageant winners or in TV period dramas like Downton Abbey. Extravagant and luxurious, a presentation bouquet is perfect for those wanting to make a statement. And, they can easily be used as decoration too.

7. Nosegay bouquet

The nosegay bouquet has been around since the middle ages and is still just as popular today! Also known as the ‘tussle-mussie’, this bouquet is usually quite small and features a few larger, focal flowers, which are then surrounded by filler flowers and framed with greenery. It’s then tied tightly with a ribbon to make it easier to hold. Neat, compact and simple to look at, this bouquet is similar to the posy, except more emphasis is on the greenery.

8. Pomander bouquet

A bouquet unlike any other is the unique pomander bouquet. Essentially a ball of flowers, this bouquet is great for decorating a room or hanging from trees for a garden party as it's usually suspended using some ribbon or string. Roses, sunflowers, carnations and gerbera daisies are popular flower choices for this type of bouquet. And to embellish it even more, many will use jewels and gems to make it sparkle and look even more glamourous.

9. Basket bouquets

Rustic and charming, basket bouquets are probably the easiest type to hold without fear of damaging the flowers. As you might’ve guessed, this type of bouquet features a bunch of beautiful blooms arranged carefully in a cute wicker basket. While some might see it as an old-fashioned style, we think they’re perfect for country garden parties or weddings or to decorate your house with during spring.
