5 top tips for DIY wedding flowers

Are you planning a wedding? While they can sometimes be stressful and expensive to organise, the flowers don’t need to be.

Arranging your wedding flowers yourself is a great option for anyone who wants to save money or who enjoys being crafty. Read on for our top tips on DIY wedding flowers, along with interviews from some of our happy brides and grooms.

1. Plan your wedding flowers ahead

What kind of wedding flowers will suit the rest of your wedding? Think about what colours you’d like and get in touch with us to find out what’ll be in season for your big day.

2. Have your flowers delivered a day or two early

We send our flowers in bud. So you’ll want to get them delivered a day or two before your big day. Not only does that give you time to arrange them how you want, it means that on the day of your wedding they’ll have perfectly bloomed. Just remember to pop them in water and keep them in a cool place as long as you can.

3. Find someone happy to help

Whether it’s your mum, your bridesmaids or a grandparent, flower arranging is fun and is a lovely way to make your favourite people feel more involved in your wedding!

4. Do a practice run

Flower arranging is much easier than you’d expect, but if you do need a confidence boost you can always do a trial run to minimise stress ahead of your wedding day.

5. Remember the groomsmen

For the perfect finish, make matching buttonholes for the groomsmen. One bouquet should provide plenty of flowers to make buttonholes for the groom and at least 5 groomsmen.

First-hand advice from a bride who did DIY wedding flowers

Meet Lucy, who got married this summer

What type of wedding did you have?

“We got married at Rufford Mill, it's a really rustic venue and has lovely grounds. It was great fun and had a homemade feel to it. My dress had been made by a relative, we had decked out the venue with lots of home grown geranium planters and my bridesmaids and I were carrying our home-arranged bouquets.”

How did you make your bouquets?

“My maid of honour is really creative and volunteered to make the bouquets for me. We received the letterbox flowers in the post on the Thursday. They were in bud when they arrived so looked great as they opened (I kept them in a cool dark place until the wedding).

I helped clip the ends off and she arranged them into spirals. She did such an amazing job. I’d ordered an extra bouquet which she added to my XL version. It was gorgeous and the effect was spectacular.”

What did you want from your wedding flowers?

“I wanted flowers that would help create the boho wedding look I had in mind. I wanted them to look good with both mine and my bridesmaids dresses, which were mismatched styles in a light pink. I loved the slightly different colours and shapes of their dresses and how it reflected their personalities.

I wasn't sure what flowers would be available at the time of my wedding. So I got in touch with Bloom & Wild and described the look I was going for and my colour scheme. They told me about a bouquet that would work and would be available for my wedding. And they were right, our bouquets helped bring the whole look together.”

What was the best thing about doing DIY wedding flowers?

“Doing my flowers this way prevented me from breaking the bank. But more importantly made my wedding day feel more personal. It couldn't have worked better, the end result was stunning.”

What made you choose Bloom & Wild for your wedding flowers?

“My husband's cousin got married last year and she used Bloom & Wild for her wedding flowers. I remember thinking how stunning the flowers were when her and her bridesmaids walked down the aisle.

Knowing she’d arranged them herself gave me the confidence to do it because I'd seen how great her bouquets were. I just wish other brides knew how easy and fun it is to do! And how you can have beautiful flowers on your wedding day without having to spend a fortune on a wedding florist!”
