How to care for your freesias

Freesias are known for being beautifully fragrant. Symbolising both innocence and friendship it’s not hard to see why they’re so popular! And if you know how to care for your freesias they can last potentially for weeks.

We’ve put together this handy guide for you to learn how to properly care for your fresh cut freesias and how to arrange them like a pro!

Our cut freesia flower care tips

Having a bouquet of freesias in your home will really spruce up the place. Luckily, for new flower parents, freesias need very simple care and maintenance to keep them healthy and happy.

1. Wash your vase

Before you even think about filling a vase with water and putting the freesias in, make sure you clean it out! Keeping the vase clean from any dust and bacteria will help your flowers last longer.

2. Let the water reach room temperature

When the vase is filled up about ¾ of the way with water, set it to one side until it reaches room temperature. Freesias like their first big drink to be warmer water than cold.

3. Use flower food

Empty a packet for flower food into the water and stir it until it’s fully dissolved. Flower food has the perfect ingredients to help get rid of bacteria and give your flowers the energy to bloom.

4. Trim the stems

When your lovely bouquet of freesias gets delivered to your door, you’ll want to trim the ends as they might be a little dry. Cut them at an angle with super sharp scissors or shears to get a clean cut. This makes it easier for the freesias to drink the water.

Also, make sure you get rid of any foliage that looks like it might fall below the waterline. You don’t want to risk bacteria building up in your fresh, clean water right away!

5. Check them often

We’re sure you’ll be admiring your freesias daily. But, make sure you have a good look at them in the vase every few days. If the water is starting to look cloudy then it’s time to freshen it up! And remember to remove any fallen foliage with a clean spoon.

If you follow our steps you can enjoy your fresh cut freesias filling your home with bursts of colour and sweet scents for up to weeks!

Top tips for arranging your freesias

Everyone wants to make their bouquet look amazing, right? Here are our top tips on how to arrange your flowers like a pro!

1. Pick your vase

We swear by a vase that’s about 30cm tall with a wider base than its neck. They make your bouquet look so full! But water jugs or mini vases and jam jars also work well.

2. Trim your stems into 3 heights

Trimming your stems helps them rehydrate faster and will make your display look fuller when you arrange! Trim 3-5cm off your tallest group, 6-10cm off your middle group and 11-15cm off your shortest group.

3. Choose a focal point

Choose a flower that catches your eye the most to be the focal point. It could be the biggest or the brightest or your favourite colour, and build your arrangement around that. Then pick other flowers of different colours, heights and shapes to complement the focal flower.

4. Criss-cross the stems

To give your bouquet a more ‘professionally done’ kind of look and to make sure it firmly holds in place, you can put your flowers in at an angle in the vase, crisscrossing the stems.

5. Get creative

If you’ve never arranged a flower bouquet before then now is the perfect time to get creative! Play around with the flowers and try out different combinations until you’re 100% happy with it. We’re positive it’ll look fabulous!

6. Find the perfect place for your flowers

When your bouquet is arranged to perfection it’s time to find the perfect place for it. Freesias like to be out of direct sunlight so we recommend putting them in a cool spot.
