Tulips by post
With spring just around the corner (nearly) tulip flowers really come into their own. Found throughout English gardens, due to their beauty, wide range of colours and relative ease to grow - tulips have long been a darling of the English springtime. From March to May, flower lovers and tourists have been known to visit the iconic fields of tulips found in Holland - a staggering 7 million flower bulbs bloom in spring at the Keukenhof in Lisse alone! Whilst we think of tulips as European, they most probably came from Northern China and Southern Europe. Thanks to their beauty and variety they were cultivated in the Ottoman Empire and imported into Holland in the sixteenth century, where due to their popularity bulbs sold for huge amounts. Luckily these prices have come down over the years, and you can now send tulips to friends and family without the hefty price tag. Tulips tend to be warm in colour, such as red tulips, orange tulips, pink tulips and purple tulips but they also come in more muted shades such as white and pale pink. One of the most amazing things about tulips is the sheer volume of colours and varieties they come in. Tulips are often said to symbolise “perfect of deep love”. Now while we know there is rarely such a thing as ‘perfect’ love, this type of love could be interpreted as that deep, unconditional type of love that we feel for family and close friends. So if you are looking for a gift for the sister that always has your back, a beautiful bouquet of tulips could be just the ticket. What do tulips symbolise?
